Lagos

It’s my first attempt to post something from Lagos. I thought I’d wait to be in Paris but it seems to be finally okay to post pictures with a 4.5ko/s connection. You just have to be more patient (A good friend of mine said once “Patience comes to those who waits.”).

At first I got really impressed by this town, it’s really different from the Africa I know, meaning Douala in Cameroon.
First of all the airport is nothing comparable to Douala’s, and when you get out of it all you see is banks, ATMs and car sellers at every corner of the streets. The streets themselves are filled with the latest Range Rovers, people driving CLS, Dodge Pick-ups, BMWs… Actually driving here is another experience. I thought that Douala was a tough town but here people take it to the next level. After 2 minutes in the car I realized that I can’t drive here. At least, not like my driver. He has a ruler in his head, and so has everybody here. It’s amazing every 10 seconds you think that you’re going to witness a car accident but people have some unconceivable skills here, being able to avoid bikes on left & right, the people running in front of the car and the trucks while they’re talking on the phone and buying water bottles from the guys on the road. Getting in the car is getting on an adventure. By the way, here, people drive on the right and pass car on the right. It seems to be the best way.

So that was my first impression: “Wow, that’s so different, it looks so much better than Douala”. Then after a couple hours in town I noticed a constant rumbling in the city. It’s the sound of the generator running half of the day because of the many electricity cuts. There’s no electricity and there’s no water. I’ve just been told that they could stay one week without water in town and that it has more or less always been like that.

In a town like Lagos, in a rich country where the economy is based on petrol it is funny for me to see that they’re not investing in things such as electricity and water.

Anyways, it’s 30°C outside and coming from the cold Paris I enjoy it

This is just a way to show what Lagos is. As a “not so safe” city it’s full of fences, grills and barb wires.
That’s just how the town is.
